WATCH AND COMMENT PLEASE!
Last week, I had to do a group project for my advertising class that promoted "RAW." RAW stands for responsibility always wins. Basically, we were trying to raise awareness of binge drinking.
The second part of the project is to make a video of our campaign and get as many people to watch it as possible. This is where you come in. Please watch the video below and tell me what you think about the project by leaving a comment.
The SIU Advertising RSO has also constructed a survey for college students to take about binge drinking. If you have the time, please go to the url below to take the survey.

RAW
The first RAW demonstration I visited was the display case in the Student Center. It was effective in catching people's attention, but I don't know about much else. I think a lot of people probably stopped, but continued after a quick lookover. I don't think giving people stats is very effective. Everyone has heard a million times that such and such amount of people die from drinking every year. However, in conjunction with all of the other activities, its effectiveness is increased because the only way that this message is going to be taken in is if it's everywhere. If RAW permeated campus well enough that people couldn't escape it and they had to think about it, then it would work, and in that case, every little thing is effective.
The other project I visited was the mock tailgate. I think it was more effective because it sort of demanded everyone's attention. No one walked by it and didn't think about the message or talk to their friends about it. The one problem with it was that the message was a little hard to pull out. Everyone could clearly see that these people were pretending to drink and they were really annoying, but I don't know how many people were able to realize the message of RAW. I think this could have been solved if there were a lot of signs up that said "RAW" and other things like "Yeah you really are this annoying when you drink too much."
I think the RAW campaign was probably successful to an extent. A lot of people had to think about their drinking and a few of them probably changed their drinking habits. Done bigger and more persistently, this type of campaign could do a lot of good.

The best test questions ever written...
Which of the following would not be considered noise (from an advertising standpoint) during a TV commercial?
-The commercial is on at a time when the target audience is not viewing TV
-A music track playing on the commercial
-An actor with a harsh and abrupt voice
-Broken speakers on the viewers television
In 1953, the company now known as Yamaha, started producing motorcycles alongside the musical equipment it had been producing for the last fifty years. This is an example of:
-A flanker brand
-Co-Branding
-Family-Branding
-A brand extension
An overt company name:
-Reveals what the company does
-Contains recognizable words
-Tries to capture the essence of the idea behind a brand
-Does not reflect the company's goods or services

My MacBook
Well, pretty much the only thing I have in my room that I put thought into buying and is something that other people have heard of is my lovely Apple MacBook. When I think of Apple, I think of...
1)reliable
2)expensive
3)sleek
4)cool
5)friend
The biggest thing that has shaped my perception of Apple is school. My middle school and elementary school only had Macs, and my high school had all PC's except for one Mac lab for graphic design. So basically, from about age 6 to age 14, I always thought of Macs as the computers with the cool games. I also had a computer teacher who constantly bashed PCs in his class, and then boasted over his Macs. When I started college last year, I bought a MacBook and have since bought tons of Apple products and I've never been disappointed.
Top 10 on brandtags
1) Apple
2) Mac
3) Cool
4) iPod
5) Design
6) Computer
7) Awesome
8) Innovative
9) Computers
10) Innovation
11)Expensive
Overall, my perception matches pretty well with what is out there. I think part of this is because for so long, Apple sort of stayed under everyone's radar, except for the people who knew of and liked Apple. Since then we've had the iPod and iPhone revolutionize music (hence innovation). Design is probably due to the fact that pretty much everyone in graphic design uses a Mac.

A Good Commercial
I don't know that this is necessarily my favorite commercial, but I do like it a lot. I just think it's hilarious. What catches my attention is the voice of the narrator. It sounds like a really goofy army commander. The music also helps a lot too. The humor of the commercial is what holds my attention. It really did make me want to buy a Vault, or at least it would have, if I liked energy drinks or Mellow Yellow. I think this is a very effective ad. Some people might not like it, but the people who would drink Vault, would think this commercial is awesome. Somebody would definitely remember the ad and want to try Vault.

GOALS!!!!
I suppose I have a lot of normal college student goals this semester. I want to pass my classes, learn some interestign stuff, etc.
I have some other goals that might not be so typical though. I want to grow closer to God throughout this semester, and I want to help grow the wonderful ministries at The Wesley Foundation. Something even more unusual would be that by the end of the semester I want to be fasting at least once a week. It's something more and more Christians are doing, and I've been reading a lot about it. I might actually start tomorrow...
Maybe by the end of the semester I'll be able to play the drums? That might not be too realistic, but I'm trying. Hopefully my album will be done too.
